History of Our Lady of Grace Montessori School

Our Lady of Grace Montessori School was established 35 years ago. Sister Felicitas Ryan, who was our education consultant and a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of IHM Executive Board, knew that the gift of this property was destined so that a school, based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori could be established. She went to Italy to study the history and philosophy of Maria Montessori. Duly impressed by her love for the street urchins in her neighborhood, as well as her brilliant mind, Sister Felicitas discovered that a medical doctor had used her education to create materials and lessons that could eventually provide an opportunity for many of Italy's poor children to become lifelong learners.

Following Maria's inspiration, Our Lady of Grace Montessori School opened in January, 1968 with twenty children and two Sisters trained in the philosophy and methodology of Maria Montessori.

Today, there are 225 children in our school taught by 2 Sisters and 18 lay teachers still following the philosophy and methodology of Maria Montessori. Our doors are opened to all children. We will not turn any away due to lack of finances.

Our Lady of Grace Montessori School is a not-for-profit corporation, sponsored by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate heart of Mary, Scranton, Pennsylvania. We do not receive monies from the parish or State taxes. Parents of children, retreatants who use the Center, as well as tremendous Fund Raising activities provide the income for the continuation of the school and center.
